If anyone who reads anything I write, as a White person, would do some self-reflection and release the need to view racism in terms of data and instead replace the term with HUMAN LIFE, we might be cooking with gas.
My illness doesn’t come from your comments - I’ve been doing this for a very long time and it would take more than a few comments to send me to the hospital. It is the collective decision of some White people to disregard the topic and instead turn it into a “debate” or an opportunity to either talk about themselves or how they were raised or how they feel.
I’m physically ill from playing therapist and educator to White people. I want White people to do their work. Just like you were able to identify how your young mind became biased against Black men, once that occurs the WORK begins. The work means reaching out to those around you who share your values and working to dismantle them so that the young person who grows up to be a cop doesn’t take that bias to work and shoot one of our sons.
So no, you didn’t personally make me physically ill, but White people’s refusal to acknowledge racism, the fact they benefit from it, and their job as the dominant social to CHANGE IT, is the root cause of my malaise. Thanks for reading.
