It's definitely been frustrating for my children to be asked where they come from. As adults they have somewhat become desensitized from it, but it was difficult as children. People who were asking them this meaningless question also had no idea of the turmoil they experienced while I was married to my abusive ex-husband so these questions only served to compound their situation.

Compassion is lacking in this country in the quest to put everyone into neat little boxes. Most people in this country are multiple ethnicities but we aren't asking everyone "what are you?" Those of us who experience this first hand know exactly why it happens and aren't lost on this which is yet another form of microaggressions designed to further oppress and minimize people of color.
