We bother because these are our lives. If you are in the fight for your life, there is not an either-or. The object is survival, period. If you are a member of an oppressed and targeted group, you don’t have the option to make a statement such as this. We cannot afford to be indifferent. We cannot afford to be conditional about this.

Of course, the goal is to secure safe futures for future generations. That is the sole reason why all those who came before us gave their lives to the struggle. I am aware it will take generations to get this done as we’ve been at this for over 400 years already.

But Black people are resilient and will never give up or take on a “why bother” mentality. Too much is at risk and we love our people enough to press on even if we won’t be here to see it come to fruition, just as our ancestors before us couldn’t imagine we would be in the positions we are today.
