You just reiterated the entire purpose of my article. Americas Heroes can be great and terrible simultaneously. I most certainly do understand that two things can exist at the same time.
I am not arguing about Lincoln, I am merely stating facts about the man that are not taught in schools, and this is for a specific reason. This is not a desired narrative - this is the truth, which is something this country is not always quick to tell.
If a desired narrative shouldn't determine history, then most of what is written and taught to our children shouldn't be printed in history books. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, America villainizes some and upholds others and typically those who are played as the villain look like me and members of my family.
Exceptionalism has been the law of the land since the beginning of time and now with the push to completely re-write all history, soon even those founding fathers who openly owned enslaved humans will be absolved of all wrong-doing.
It is dangerous to limit a story - all truth, whether it's popular or not-needs to be told. I won't ever change my position on that.
